Hi all,
There is a crew of us putting books in the state system and I am looking at low cost programs to have an ONLINE card catalog here in Meriden. I want to thank myself, Lori, Barb and Betsey who are all entering books into the system. When we finish the fiction I will try out some catalogs. It will be nice to have the book information accessible, hopefully over the internet.
The new display of Betty Pardoe's photos and watercolors is quite popular and we also have cards of Meriden scenes for sale @ $3.00 each. I will upload some pictures of the display next week.
We set a time for the preliminary Genealogy group and it will be next Tuesday @ 4PM.
I'm looking forward to the next LUV meeting, its a luncheon at the Howe (what a library!) and I will be getting the next batch of DVDs. Many look forward to the new group when they arrive. Since I am not a member of the DVD committee have no idea what we will receive so it is always a nice surprise.
Story hour today is at KUA and not here, too many kids with sniffles. I miss seeing the 3-4 year olds. Rachel is doing a theme of animals getting ready for winter. Does that include all of us who are stacking wood??
Until next week,
Jeanne

A Sunny Monday
Hi all,
It was very busy here on Saturday. I left with a lot of work left to do but now I am caught up. A sunny Monday is a much quieter day. I guess very rainy Saturdays are a draw for libraries.
Not a lot of news. Laura Ward is now the President of the Meriden Library Association. Janet Connolly resigned with regret due to illnesses in her family. She pitched in when we had a need last year. Plans for the group for the year will be finalized in January.
It looks like a genealogy group is starting up later this Fall and a course on sustainable living may start in January. Both of these groups would meet on a Monday evening. if interested, please let me know.
Just ordered Super Freakonomics and the Gladwell book, What the Dog Saw, also the new Ayn Rand biography.
Always new books arriving and processed each Tuesday
All for now,
Jeanne

Cold!
Hi all,
It is only October but it sure feels like November out there! I'm ok with it if the sun is out, otherwise it is just too gloomy.
Yesterday, on my day off I went to Woodstock with three friends from MA and we went to sculpturefest. Turns out one of the sculptors (the large horses) was her cousin. There are well over 50 items on a hillside and fun to see.
Betty Pardoe is going to add items to our showcase in November. her many lovely photos (some of winter are really special) and some of her smaller watercolors.
The Meriden Library Association is meeting Monday night at 7:00. They are looking for new members so if you want to be a friend of the library come to the meeting. They tend to plan several events each year and this is the planning meeting for 2010.
The newest books by Kellerman, Parker, Baldachi , Cornwell etc are here. You can put your name on the wait list!

Peak Foliage
Hi all,
I was away on vacation to Acadia and want to thank Lori, Barb and AnnaMay for covering the library for a few days. The lock even finally was fixed while I was gone. No more getting stuck in the library or locked out! Glad to see the old lock gone for good.
It was busy while I was hiking, checking out the foliage and taking lots of photos. Quite a few new books came in and more will be added by Annamay next Tuesday. The new books fly off the shelves and many I try to get for their release date. Haven't heard how the new Dan Brown book is faring, the reviews on Amazon aren't that appealing.
We are closed on Monday for Columbus Day, on Tuesday the trustees meet and on Thursday the first mystery book club on the year starts reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". The sequel is out and circulating heavily, "The Girl who Plays with Fire"
The foliage is at peak in the hills of Meriden and along Mascoma Lake, Canaan on drive home. Really a good year, get out and enjoy!!!

It's Already October!
Fall greetings,
We are updating the library. This building was constructed in 1965 and since then not much was done. So this summer a new bathroom and hot water were added, never had hot water here until recently and wirth flu epidemics etc. really a necessity.
Then the furnace developed a hugh crack and other problems so Simple Energy replaced the furnace. The oil tank still needs replacement.
Next we discovered there were no smoke detectors in the library and so we weren't up to code.Win Spencer wired them in as specified by the building inspector. I bought a CO2 detector so the library is as safe as it can be. Much thanks to Pam Abrahamson for all the coordinating work she did!
We will be replacing a lock soon and hopefully that will be all the maintenance we need.
Two books group meet in October and both the Trustees and Meriden Library Association will have meetings.
We are adding many new non-fiction children's books this month.
We hope to start a toddler group and a genealogy group if there is interest.
Lady Rachel is doing great story hours again!
A big thank you to Doris LeVarn for bringing us fresh flowers several times a week and for giving us a subscription to Eating Well magazine.
Will try to update this blog more often,
Jeanne

September News
It's the busy Fall season. I am going to a CLIF conference on library marketing this Friday in WRJ. And Monday I am going to a LUV meeting so we will be getting new DVD on our rotation (for 3 months). The topic is on Children but other news from the NH library will also be discussed.
We signed up for the big read which is in March. Everyone will be reading "To Kill a Mockingbird"and I won the use of a large banner announcing the event which we may rotate around town to get the word out.
The Library Board of Trustees met this week and we welcomed Mark Pensgen as a new trustee. The board has agreed to expand the loan period for books from 2 to 3 weeks. After that we will start with a fine fee of ten cents a day per item. DVDs go out for a week with the same fine schedule. This is what Lebanon Library does and I'm hoping people will be more conscientious about returning library materials.
The display case has a wonderful exhibit of illustrated children's books "School Days in the late 1800's". Come see for yourselves!
Happy Fall to all!
